Engaging Practices for Integrating Restorative Justice Principles in Group Settings

As restorative practices spread around the world, scholars and practitioners have begun to ask very important questions: How should restorative practices be taught? What educational structures and methods are in alignment with restorative values and principles? This book introduces games as an effective and dynamic tool to teach restorative justice practices. Grounded in an understanding of restorative pedagogy and experiential learning strategies, the games included in this book provide a way for learners to experience and more deeply understand restorative practices while building relationships and improving skills. Chapters cover topics such as:
Introduction to restorative pedagogy and experiential learningHow a restorative learning community can be built and strengthened through the use of games and activitiesHow to design games and activities for teaching restorative practicesHow to design, deliver, and debrief an activity-based learning experienceIn-depth instructions for games and activities for building relationships, understanding the restorative philosophy, and developing skills in practice
An ideal handbook for educators, restorative justice program directors and trainers, consultants, community group leaders, and anyone else whose work draws people together to resolve disagreements or address harm, this book will serve as a catalyst for greater creativity and philosophical alignment in the teaching of restorative practices across contexts.

  1. Grace

    Great read!
A small book but full of practical teachings.

  2. SETH ISMIL

    Interactive games!
Social Shuffle worked out great with a group of 20 teachers. Reframing looks like fun! This is a lot of great ideas packed into a small book.

Much more than the Title promises
This book is great, all around! It has a wide variety of fun and useful games and activities for all ages, But it also provides many lessons, rooted in experience, about building and sharing restorative justice approaches in communities. This book can help you transform your own community!

  4. Jess Z.

    Loved it
Nothing but the deepest respect for these two authors, taking their considerable experience using restorative processes and creating games and activities that are engaging as well as useful. This book provided a variety of well thought out options for [a restorative justice practitioner or enthusiast] to turn to in bringing the organization/workplace out of theory and into practice. (but with ease and fun!)If you can teach a group the why, this is the how.

A+ Smart, Crisp & Helpful Book!
A+Pedagogists Pointer & McGoey demonstrate restorative teaching tools with a smart, crisp & helpful book. Their methodology for a new restorative learning community demonstrates the pearls of true wisdom that solves problems. Loaded with gracious acknowledgements to the context of the movement, it is very well written. This accessible book met my needs & provided me with a greater window of tolerance. I was facing group discord & was feeling trapped into being punitive. However, after reading this book I had a liberating experience. I now want to face the group’s problems & address them “with” the group. Thank you for the relevant real life examples.-Community Activist Suzanne Balliett

    Disappointing.
I was looking for a book that could quickly get my acquainted with the concept of restorative practices. This book was not helpful and it was very dryly written.

An excellent work of applying games and fun activities to organize various levels of trainings of restorative justice practice. The reader may want to learn beforehand the basic terms of restorative practices, such as reflective statement, active listening, and reframing.
