After undergoing many weeks of training during the harsh winter months in the frozen north, Jesse McDermitt and Rusty Thurman are ready for some time off, their last leave period in their first year in the Marine Corps.
Only this time, it’s not palm trees and sunny tropical beaches they’ll be unwinding at, but diving in the frigid and treacherous coastal waters off the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the famed Graveyard of the Atlantic, thought to hold great wealth in the cold embrace of her murky depths.
The perilous banks, with their constantly shifting cuts, both far offshore, and in Pamlico Sound, have been the stronghold of piracy for centuries and thousands of ships lay in their watery graves there. Modern pirates don’t plunder merchant vessels for gold, sugar, and silks, but instead preyed on all sorts of boaters around the Sound, even drug traffickers.
When Jesse and Rusty, along with another Marine, run up against the ocean thieves, an unlikely partner joins in the fight to tip the odds.
The OBX has a history as deep and dark as the ocean that surrounds it. And all too often, man-made storms cause just as much havoc as the hurricanes which have lashed her shores.

A Great Read
An interesting story about drug traffickers and their efforts to make life miserable for others. Along the way, Jesse progresses in the Marines, he meets some women, they go diving a wreck for treasure. His sergeant’s wife is kidnapped… Loved the book!

Great story
I am loving these early year stories about Jesse. I am curious about the bar fight scene in chapter 24. It very much resembled the dinner scene in the movie “Secondhand Lions” with Pap playing the Robert Duval part. Coinsidence???
Ed Henry –
That’s why he does that.
Some of the things that we’ve seen as the characters have grown are shown in this book. You get a sense of how Jesse matured and some of the things that got him there in a hurry. I look forward to the other books as they come out in 2026.

Meeeah.
Something happened to this author with this series. He is trying to tie things together with the previous series with pretty good results, but then he goes into blah blah blah blah blah mode and loses the idea of an action/adventure series. This is also the case with the last book in the original series. The author needs to put more effort into the plot and action, and less time trying to be the “Tropical Dickens”. I’m not looking forward to these like I used to.

Stinnett does it again
This is the third installment in Stinnett’s Tropical Adventure series. featuring a young Jesse McDermitt. Like the first two, this one one helps explain the Jesse of the future. He and Rusty visit Russ on leave, find a little treasure, slay a few bad guys. This book includes Pap, Jesse’s grandfather and also a Marine badass.Give it a try. You will be happy.
