“Propulsive … a dizzying Gothic whodunit.”
—New York Times Book Review

Bestselling author Riley Sager returns with a Gothic chiller about a young caregiver assigned to work for a woman accused of a Lizzie Borden-like massacre decades earlier.

At seventeen, Lenora Hope
Hung her sister with a rope

Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Stabbed her father with a knife
Took her mother’s happy life

It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night. In her seventies and confined to a wheelchair, Lenora was rendered mute by a series of strokes and can only communicate with Kit by tapping out sentences on an old typewriter. One night, Lenora uses it to make a tantalizing offer—I want to tell you everything.

“It wasn’t me,” Lenora said
But she’s the only one not dead

As Kit helps Lenora write about the events leading to the Hope family massacre, it becomes clear there’s more to the tale than people know. But when new details about her predecessor’s departure come to light, Kit starts to suspect Lenora might not be telling the complete truth—and that the seemingly harmless woman in her care could be far more dangerous than she first thought.

    Honest review- new fave author
I just finished The Only One Left, and wow—what a ride. Riley Sager has always been great at crafting suspense, but this one really got me. From the very first page, I was hooked. The atmosphere is eerie and immersive, with just the right amount of creepiness that kept me turning pages late into the night. What I loved most were the twists—seriously, they were completely unpredictable. Just when I thought I had figured something out, the story would shift and throw me off in the best way. It never felt forced either; everything came together in such a clever, satisfying way. I caught myself saying “no way!” more than once out loud. The characters were layered, especially the protagonist, and I appreciated how the story peeled back their histories bit by bit. It’s not just a thriller—it’s a story with real emotional weight too.If you’re into twisty, atmospheric thrillers that actually surprise you, this is definitely one to pick up. Highly recommend.

    The Only One Left
I needed a moment to process my thoughts at the end of this masterpiece! There is absolutely no way to prepare you for the adventure you are about to go on when reading The Only One Left. I thought I had a solid grasp of who done it, but boy was I wrong! The use of the unreliable narrator and the fragmented story absolutely hooked me and my jaw dropped every time I picked it up off the floor. Riley Sager is a master storyteller and I will continue to dive into his work!“At seventeen, Lenora HopeHung her sister with a ropeStabbed her father with a knifeTook her mother’s happy life”Or did she???4.5/5 and an absolute must read.

A thrill ride of a read…I could not put it down !
The only One Left by Riley SagerThe story moves at a fast paced, compelling plot with intriguing (and some) mysterious characters. Plenty of twists, turns and secrets had me on the edge of my seat. As the story progressed and thought I had it all figured out, I’ didn’t-see-that-coming moments occurred, leading to the shocking satisfying ending.Overall I found The Only One Left very enjoyable. Riley Sager is quickly becoming one of my favorite Authors. I highly recommend to those who enjoy suspense/thrillers/psychological-thrillers, I look forward to reading more by this Author.

    So good!
I couldn’t put this down. I was glued from start to finish. I was literally on the edge of my seat, trying to guess who it was. There were so many twists that they kept me wanting more.

    Too many plot twists
It was an interesting read until the last third of the book when it seemed Sager was just throwing plot twist after plot twist just to do it. I found it too clunky by the end and felt the original plot twist would have sufficed.

A who really did the deeds novel
Found this novel pretty interesting. Whilebyou are lead to believe who the killer really is, it’s not that easy. Many little twists that lead you tobone person, then it goes in another direction and you are left wondering who the real killer actually is. It gets a little boring here and there, but overall, a nice story that keeps you guessing right up to the end. This would make a nice made for tv movie.

Book twists? This book has a ton of them
Having the want to read a story about something I haven’t read before made me want to really like this book. It did not disappoint. Just when I thought I know how was guilty and who it could have been a twist throws me for a loop. And then another one. And then another one. Good book to get done on a long weekend, easy read, and very enjoyable.

4.75 starsso close to being perfect it just had a small dip in the last 4 chapters execpt the last chapter redeemed itself also. This book is addictive from the start. it reads quite gothic mystery with a solid plot and small list of characters. So much to unpack which will leave you guessing throughout. The brilliant bit about the book is that there are several linked mysteries not just the one and although one of the biggest is revealed about 70% into the book there are many more questions and answers ultimately which just keeps you wanting to know more and then ending was fantastic! I love books with a fantastic last chapter that may or may not change everything or a lot.The initial premise is simple. Kit is a caregiver for sick people. She is hired by the estate of Lenora Hope who is the last surviver of a horrific incident over 50 yrs earlier where her entire wealthy family was killed. The kicker is although never proven, the entire town thinks Lenora killed them all and so Kit walks into a spooky house with so many secrets in order to care for someone who may have killed her entire family. Of course Kit must know what happens and so she digs and digs for the truth.loved it and totally recommend it!

  10. Vanessa Pereira

“The Only One Left” by Riley Sager is a captivating gothic thriller that intertwines elements of mystery, suspense, and psychological drama. Set in 1983, the narrative follows Kit McDeere, a caregiver with a tarnished reputation, who is assigned to look after Lenora Hope—a woman accused of murdering her family in 1929. Lenora, now incapacitated and unable to speak, resides in the decaying mansion known as Hope’s End, perched precariously on a cliff’s edge. As Kit assists Lenora in typing out her story, she becomes deeply entangled in the dark secrets of the Hope family and the ominous history of the mansion.Sager masterfully crafts an atmospheric setting reminiscent of classic gothic tales, drawing parallels to works like “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “Rebecca.” The novel alternates between Kit’s present-day experiences and Lenora’s typewritten accounts, effectively building suspense and keeping readers on edge. The characters are intricately developed, each harboring their own secrets, adding depth to the unfolding mystery.Critical reception has been largely positive. Kirkus Reviews describes it as “an entertaining thriller,” noting its ability to evoke classic gothic elements while delivering unexpected twists.Similarly, a review from Criminal Element praises the novel as “a masterclass in atmospheric suspense,” highlighting Sager’s skill in crafting a story where “no detail can be taken for granted.”In summary, “The Only One Left” offers a richly atmospheric and suspenseful journey into a family’s dark past, set against the backdrop of a haunting mansion. While the novel excels in building tension and developing complex characters, some readers may find the climax stretches plausibility. Nonetheless, fans of gothic thrillers and intricate mysteries are likely to find this book a compelling read.
