#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER THE BLOCKBUSTER JACK REACHER SERIES THAT INSPIRED TWO MAJOR MOTION PICTURES AND THE STREAMING SERIES REACHER
“The best one yet.”—Stephen King
Someone has tried to kill the French president. How many snipers can shoot from three-quarters of a mile with total confidence? John Kott—a U.S. Army marksman gone bad—is one of them. After fifteen years in prison, he’s out . . . and there’s a G8 summit coming up, packed with enough world leaders to tempt any assassin.
If anyone can stop Kott, it’s the man who beat him before: Jack Reacher. And though he’d rather work alone, Reacher is teamed with rookie analyst Casey Nice. They’re facing a rough road, full of local thugs, double-crosses, and no backup if things go wrong. Reacher never gets too close. But this time it’s personal.
This edition includes the bonus short story “Not a Drill.”

Another great book by Lee Child. This one is better than others in the series.
Another great book by Lee Child. Some books are better than others and this one is just as good as his last. Some books drag on and on and aren’t the page turners I’m used to by him. But overall, not bad.

‘Sherlock Homeless’ Goes International
The new Lee Child novel, Personal, begins with Jack in Seattle, where he sees a notice in an Army newspaper, asking him to contact a senior officer with whom he worked in the past. The friend is calling in a marker, asking Jack to conduct an operation for a still-more-senior officer who has MI6, the CIA, et al. on speed-dial.A sniper has attempted to kill the French president and with an impending meeting of the G8 in London the most likely candidates for the role of super sniper are at large. One is Russian, one is English, one American. The latter (arrested earlier by Jack Reacher) has completed a 15-year prison sentence and has, presumably, been preparing over the last year to get back to doing what he does best.Since all of the three countries will be searching for âitsâ sniper and since MI5 and the Met will be on the alert (and since the sniper or snipers will be protected by one of several possible, local criminal organizations), London is going to be very crowded. Jack will be aided in his investigation by a sweet, attractive, twenty-something working for the state department named (oddly) Casey Nice.So what are the attractive features of the novel? There are two in particular. First, Jack is going international, with lengthy scenes in both Paris and London. Second, he is going to attempt to rival Stephen Hunterâs Bob Lee Swagger in his knowledge of sniper rifles, ballistics, windage and the other technical details involved in attempting to assassinate an individual with a .50 calibre weapon at a distance of some 1600 yards. Child handles the international settings very well and gives Stephen Hunter a run for his money in detailing the technical realities of the sniperâs task. Why only 4 stars? The cerebral, analytic, intensely-observant Reacher (now being called âSherlock Homelessâ) combines with the physical Reacher to very good effect but in my humble opinion the plot is not as strong as one might wish. The overall story is fine; the settings are nicely realized and the characters are well-developed. However, as the plot arcs stretch out we feel that the ending is going to involve one or more reversals. It is not that the ending is fully telegraphed, but that we increasingly come to expect something different than what we are being led to anticipate.I do not want to be more explicit and spoil the ending. I did enjoy the book and felt that the ending was satisfying. It simply lacked the crescendo that I had hoped for. Readers of the series will still embrace the book and first-time readers will see why Lee Child is among the worldâs best thriller writers.

Wish Lee understood sentence structure
Lee Child can weave an interesting tale about Jack Reacher but may drive readers who are familiar with proper sentence structure and use of punctuation to the brink. I know thatâs the case for me. I purchased the entire Jack Reacher series of books after seeing the first season of the series. I never would have read so many of his books if I hadnât already paid for them.I have often wondered why, with all the money that Lee Child must have brought in from his writing, he canât seem to afford a staff who will proofread and correct the many mistakes throughout his books. Same goes for his publisher.I held onto hope with each successive book that he might learn something about writing and make his books easier to read. I hoped, with the addition of his brother on the last couple, that the books would improve but seemed to get only worse. Sometimes, 2 whole pages of back-and-forth banter are written with nothing to occasionally let you know who is speaking, so multiple readings may be needed at times to sort it out. I think almost all, if not all, of the pages have sentences with commas where none are needed, periods where commas are needed, clauses used as sentences, and a new paragraph starting from a clause that belongs in the previous sentence of the preceding paragraph. As I said, hard to read if you understand basic sentence structure. There are often times where I wish Lee had done one iota of research to get facts right. I refer to passages in the stories where it was apparent that Lee Child had no experience or knowledge; I guess, more or less, the writing is off the top of his head. Some problems are:1: He thinks the flashing emergency lights of vehicles in the western states are the same as in much of the New England states (blue on fire trucks and red on police).2: He didnât know what the average shoe size in America is actually 10 ½ (stating it as 9)3: He thinks a large man like Jack Reacher would have what Lee evidently thinks of as a large foot size of 11, instead of something closer to 14 or 15 (I am 6â1â and wear a 13.) I assume Lee has a small foot.4: Lee has never been near a fast-moving train, thinking there is violent ground movement when the train is even over a mile away and hurricane force winds near one traveling 60 mph.5: He seems to think that all gas stations and quick marts sell khaki pants and various shirts, packs of socks, and underwear.6: Jack Reacher can knock anyone unconscious and very often dead with one punch. I can remember only a couple times when it took two.7: He thinks face bones will âshatterâ from a Jack Reacher punch and can knock out a gorilla or even an elephant. Jack also never has injuries to his hand or elbow from such amazing blows.8: Jack Reacherâs hands are said to be as large as a dinner plate and his fists as large as Thanksgiving turkeysâ¦really?Yes, his books are hard to read for these and other reasons caused by lack of oversight by his publisher and lack of staff. Please, I hope never to find out he has a staff that lets this stuff through. Good storyteller, other than the lack of research on details and no idea as to sentence/paragraph structure..Rating would be five for the story.Won’t buy future books

Personally this is one of the better books from Lee Child. This felt like it was a return to the roots (See One Shot) with clever plotting, thrilling insights (including a description of how to bust open a door like a pro).We have the FBI, CIA, MI6 , KGB who are all invloved because someone has taken a shot at the VP of France and missed (or did he ?).The stakes have never been higher. Just when i thought it was getting into predictable Stephen Hunter territory there is surprising twist just 100 pages into the book. Its a very scary proposition to think about.Considering that a Never Go Back ( A mediocre book by the way) movie is in the works, I personally believe this would make a much better hollywood blockbuster.Final conclusion. A definitive thriller to be added to your Reacher collection

Another good Reacher novel, this time partly set in London, which is very interesting as a UK resident. Good to see Reacherâs take on the UK.

Unbedingt lesen!
